The Special Commission of Inquiry into Healthcare Funding will resume its public hearings on Tuesday, 11 June 2024, at 10am at the Chief Secretary’s Building, Level 2, 121 Macquarie Street, Sydney. The hearings will be livestreamed on the homepage of the Inquiry’s website.

The public hearings will provide an opportunity for the Inquiry to hear from a wide range of witnesses, including representatives from the public sector, healthcare representative bodies, service providers, and people with experience of the health system.

The hearings will be an opportunity for the Inquiry to gather evidence about issues relating to the following three hospitals/networks and will include:

St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney

  • The benefits and limitations of a model in which a public hospital is operated by an affiliated health organisation.
  • The appropriateness and adequacy of current funding models for operations at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney.

Hawkesbury Hospital

  • The transfer of the hospital’s operations from St John of God Health Care Inc (SJOG) to the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District.
  • A comparison of the public operations at Hawkesbury Hospital with SJOG’s private hospitals and SJOG’s operations in other jurisdictions.

The Sydney Children’s Hospital Network (SCHN)

  • The benefits and limitations of the SCHN’s network structure.
(The Inquiry does not intend to focus on the delivery of paediatric cardiothoracic surgical services between the hospitals at Westmead and Randwick, as this does not fall directly within the Inquiry’s Terms of Reference).

Though the Inquiry will hear some evidence related to the operation of public private partnerships
within the NSW Health system, the operation of the Northern Beaches Hospital will not form one of
the case studies at the hearings during the week of 11 June.

The Inquiry invites members of the public to actively participate by live streaming the hearings,
providing an opportunity to stay informed and engaged. Live streaming links will be available on the
website.

The Inquiry will deliver the final report to the Governor on or before 26 March 2025.
